One-third of everything we put on our tables every day relies directly on the pollination of the honeybees. They are the most important pollinator in agriculture. Apples, cherries, almonds, even onion are almost entirely dependant on honeybees. Furthermore, the livestock consumes a large portion of plants which are also pollinated by our little friends. It all adds up to about 70% of our food needs bees to be present in order to make its way to our tables. Yet bees are dying at an increasing rate.
The modernization and consolidation of the agricultural sector promote unsustainable practices which in turn cause high mortality among the bees. Monocultures, pesticides, and bad hive management to name a few.
